Edward D. Reuss retired from the New York City Police Department after
29 years of service. Appointed to the NYPD as a Patrolman in 1963, he served in the rank of Sergeant, Lieutenant , and Captain of Police. 
He takes pride in the fact that during his entire police career; he served in patrol precincts. He began his police career in Manhattan’s 4th Precinct. He transferred to Staten Island’s 123rd Precinct until his promotion to the rank of Sergeant in 1973 and was assigned to the 120th and 123rd Precincts. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1981 and assigned to the 9th Precinct in Manhattan. He again served in the 120th Precinct until his promotion to the rank of Captain. His duties in the rank of Captain included the executive Captain, 120th Precinct.
He graduated from St. John’s University, B.S. Criminal Justice, magna cum laude in 1981. He is a member of the Captain’s Endowment Association of the New York City Police Department, the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the International Police Association, IPA Region 2 (NYC).
While serving in the United States Army, he attended the Provost Marshal General’s School, Fort Gordon, Georgia. The program of training for assignment to the Military Police included the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). He served two years of active duty with the 226th Military Police Company, Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana.
He has presented seminars on workplace violence at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CCNY . The seminars are designed to create a partnership between the police and the private sector to facilitate a coordinated response to incidents of violence in the workplace. Based on the guidelines of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the seminar prepares both law enforcement and the private sector to design a threat management plan for their workplace. Workplace violence includes conduct ranging from threatening conduct and simple assaults to barricaded hostage situations and terrorism. Critical incident stress defusing sessions and debriefings so vital in prevention of post traumatic stress disorder is also an important part of these seminars. Those who have attended the seminar include representatives of the FBI, Wall Street firms, the media, and the medical community.
Since retiring from active service, he realized a lifetime dream of visiting Italy. During the 75th Anniversary of the establishment of An Garda Siochana in 1997, he traveled to Ireland and met many of the Irish police and saw the concept of community policing at its best.
In January 1999, he launched NY Cop Online Magazine, www.nycop.com. This online magazine features true accounts of the men and women of the NYPD. Writers are encouraged to submit their work for publication online. All copyrights are retained by the authors. The site also features a Book of the Month with reviews and excerpt. Those who visit the site include many members of the global law enforcement community.
